The Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to assisting military members and their friends & families as they adapt to the unique challenges of the military lifestyle. Based on our work together rebranding the organization, we had the pleasure of working with them again – this time to completely overhaul their website.
Because of the breadth of programs and services they offer their community, and the diverse needs of their users, many of their offerings go unnoticed – so one of the greatest challenges in redesigning their website was to make what they offer more discoverable and accessible. We also wanted to provide a more tailored approach to providing content, rather than expecting site visitors to navigate an impersonal menu system.
We designed and developed a custom system, backed by WordPress, that uses human curation to provide ‘next steps’ – likely next items of interest, based on the user’s current location within the site structure. The system is quick and easy for staff to use but provides a much more relevant user experience for site visitors.
A robust calendar system ties together all of their events, workshops and classes. It also allows community members to submit events of their own, saving staff hours in administration time, and streamlining many internal processes.
We carried their new visual branding over to the new site, creating a clean, contemporary and friendly feel. A responsive layout and carefully considered user-centric touches throughout the site reinforce the MFRC’s position as a trusted resource that’s always available for the military community.
Rebranding the Esquimalt MFRC was a complex assignment and one that I feared that a designer might not ‘get’. Matt came aboard, absorbed a lot of information and asked really good questions. His attention to detail was very high. An absolutely great listener! The process he took us through had a profound impact on us. It was such a valuable journey. A great way to re-focus us on why we exist. It has also been a great experience for our staff here at the MFRC. Given us a springboard to connect as an organization. Oh, and the end product pretty much nailed it on the head for us. Looking forward to working with Matt again.
